Does MG Affect Your Joints? Also Does It Affect Digestion Problems Like G.e.r.d.? Or Is That A Result Of Prednisone?

Hi Chelsey, I did see a GI Dr. When the Gerd got so bad. Prednisone had way too many bad side effects on me and I will opt out of taking it ever again. I was only on it for four months but it set me back years in my recovery from high cholesterol..bp..tryglicerides. just not worth it to correct double vision.

I had worsening GERD since being on 40 mg of prednisone since November 2024, and gained 26 lbs in a month. I tapered/weaned down to 15 mg and the GERD has improved, now an uphill battle to lose the weight gained. 🤷🏼‍♀️ I found prednisone side effects here: https://medlineplus.gov/druginfo/meds/a601102.h... -- I referenced this when my CBC came back all wonky; I had hot flashes; extreme hunger; worsening diabetes from the prednisone requiring insulin Lispro; and irritability (lol). This is helpful (and is a reputable site) to see all what prednisone side effects there are. On the list of side effects is "heartburn", so I think they could go hand-in-hand (though everyone is different and this gMG thing is complicated!), although I can say that I had LA Grade B esophagitis and GERD before I was diagnosed with gMG, but have likely had the gMG for a long time and was using compensatory coping strategies to deal with it until I had an acute exacerbation. Did you mention it to your doctor? It might be worth mentioning so they can help you with a referral to GI or gastroenterology if it is daily and moderately affecting your quality of life. If anything, seeing a GI doc will give you more information -- that's the stance that I took when I saw GI and they did an upper endoscopy. GERD is no fun for sure, so I feel for you. I would love to still take esomeprazole, but it interacts with the CellCept that I am taking, so I have removed a lot of the triggers from my diet and went on an autoimmune disorders-based diet to help with all the inflammation per my neuromuscular doctor. Let me know how it pans out, you are in my thoughts!

Lol. Well I'm clumsy too Robert but I'm thinking my joint pains are coming from the calcium and d3 pills I'm taking for my osteoporosis. The gastroenterologist told me prednisone can cause Gerd and the hiatal hernia I have acquired since being on prednisone

Sorry I don’t know but I have never had GERD or joint issues, my biggest issue is shaking hands and being clumsy.

Myasthenia gravis (MG) doesn't directly cause joint pain, but treatments like prednisone can lead to joint issues, such as osteoporosis or bone damage, especially with long-term use. MG can indirectly cause digestion problems like GERD due to muscle weakness in the throat and esophagus, making swallowing difficult. Prednisone can also worsen GERD by irritating the stomach lining. Always discuss symptoms with your healthcare provider.
